What Oranges to use?

You can use any kinds of oranges. Oranges with a thicker skin like navel oranges work really well in this candied orange peel recipe.

I prefer organic Navel oranges for this recipe as you will be consuming the peels and would want them to be pesticide-free. Be sure to scrub the oranges well under running water before using them.

Uses

Candied oranges peel is an essential ingredient in Christmas cakes and puddings and can be used in a variety of cakes, muffins, and cookies.

My favourite use for candied orange peel is in Eggless Orange cupcakes or Orange Cake. It is a great way to add sweet orange flavour to all kinds of desserts. Sprinkle over cup of your favourite ice cream or mousse, or add some to srikhand.

It can also be used in your morning boring oats meal, or simply as a delicious accompaniment to a Super fluffy Jowar roti.

You can even use candied orange peels to decorate your cupcakes or milkshakes glass.

Storing

These Candied peels will last for at least 6 months in the refrigerator.

Store these orange peels in an airtight glass jar with tight lid.

Other Citrus Peel Options

  • You can use the same process to candy the peel of other citrus fruits.
  • A visually stunning option would be to candy the bright-green peel of limes, and the zesty yellow peel of lemons.
  • Thinly sliced ginger also makes a wonderful candied ginger.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • If using the candied orange peel in cakes and cookies or cupcakes, it is recommended that you cut it into small pieces that can be easily mixed in the batter.
  • If you are going to use the candied orange peels as a snack or for dipping it in chocolate, the peel should be cut into long strips.

Ingredients:
 Peels of 3 Organic Oranges
 100 g Sugar
 100 ml Water
 50 ml Fresh Orange Juice

Instructions:
1

Wash oranges thoroughly with water. Pat dry using a kitchen towel.

2

Cut off the ends using a knife. Score the orange cutting just the skin.

Continue making vertical cuts around the orange cutting each section about 2-inch wide.

3

Remove the orange peel following the cut lines.

4

In a medium pot of boiling water, cook peel until slight tender, about 4-5 minutes.

5

Drain in a colander and toss a few times to remove any remaining water.

6

Remove white Pith part using knife or spoon from all the peels as that is quite bitter and would result in a bitter product.

7

Now cut your orange peel into smaller strips. I like to cut it small so that I can use the orange peel later directly for cakes and sweet, but you can cut the peel into longer strips too if you want.

8

Transfer the small stripes to a boiling water and again boil for few minutes.

9

Drain in a colander and toss a few times to remove any remaining water.

10

Now take a pan and add freshwater, Sugar and Fresh Orange juice to the orange peels and let them simmer slowly on a low flame, stirring occasionally.
